Unfortunately, President Angelique was unable to lead the throng of attendees; Pricilla Dewing took over and assumed the position she will inherit after a few months.
"Cuddly Kevin" started with the Flag salute, and we were on our way! Immediately, Tom Tragesser ran to the dais to introduce our speaker Jennie Rayner from the Living Free Animal Sanctuary based in Desert Center on Highway 74. She introduced us to the life and care that they give to abandoned animals in the surrounding areas. With over 100 acres, all the animals get to live out their lives in a large open environment.
With some startling figures about abandoned and animals in shelters, she updated us on the “No-kill” situation which was being gradually adapted in Riverside County. Note that Jennie is also a Rotarian from the Idyllwild club. With a gift from our club, we moved on.
Jim Blackburn shuffled forward to the microphone. The club was still reeling following news of the passing of his wife recently. He gave a somewhat humorous (despite the circumstances) about their life together in various positions within the USA. It was a real insight into their lives and the experiences they have had.
Having to follow that with a heavy heart, was Leroy with initial details on July 1st when we relieve Angelique of her “burden” and pass it on to Priscilla. A theme for the evening had not been decided, let us hope that it is not “clothing optional” as slipped from Leroy’s mouth accidently.
Mark Stanley (your scribe) arose to mention last week’s Thirsty Thursday and the next one at Oceana. He hoped that the attendance at these events would rise as with just a handful of people, it is extremely difficult to organize.
Kevin closed the meeting with the 4-way test and we left to continue another Rotary week.
